On Depression

duaa4duaa:

I would just like to say shame on our community for stigmatizing mental health disorders, depression is not a state of low Iman. It’s unjust to say that someone who may or may have not been born with a mental health condition, just like being born with any other kind of health condition or deformity, essentially a form of jihad, was born with a damaged soul.

We all have our own tests, some hearts can bare more than others but, that doesn’t make us weak, and it certainly doesn’t mean that Allah is angry with us, for he has designed us to seek His light. So for those of you whose hearts ache, whose bodies can’t move from their beds throughout the day, who spend time throughout their day distressed, anxious for multitudes of reasons, or perhaps even no conscious reason at all know that it’s not because you don’t love Allah, know that it’s not because you don’t have faith, know that it’s not because you aren’t grateful of the pleasures Allah has given us in this life, know that you are NOT alone, know that whatever has happened to you, or whatever you’re going through is NOT your fault, but because Allah has ordained individual struggles for us all so that we may become the believers He wants us to be for our own good. Remember Allah will provide, Allah will provide for your pain and your hardship, so that you may gain closeness and ease from Allahs light.

I pray that all of us are able to overcome our struggles, and that Allah softens our hearts, provides us with the strength to persevere through times of distress. Ameen

If you find that you are contemplating harming yourself in any way, please talk to someone you can trust, and or try to find a way get access to medical attention, I know it is may be very difficult unfortunately if you’re financially burdened. If you’re in the uk this website, Muslim Youth Helpline myh.org.uk has great online counseling services, and a helpline you can call if you need someone to talk, or help you.

Meet the head of the IDF’s social media unit, lieutenant Sacha Dratwa, who steered Israel’s lousy hasbara campaign on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and elsewhere, which Hamas beat hands down. Dratwa has a very public Facebook account where I found this photo. Imagine, the arrogance of not caring that his 1000+ subscribers, not to mention curious observers like myself, can see his dark painted face with the words “Obama style” underneath . Apparently you can be as blatantly racist as you want in Israel and still enjoy Obama’s unadulterated support.

Why does this not have more notes!?

Racist as fuck.
Not that any of this is surprising, considering how Israel treats (not only Palestinians but also) African migrants.
Fuck this shit.

You’re right it’s so wrong for a country that’s been constantly bombed by Hamas to not only give them MULTIPLE warnings but to tell them that if you live in Gaza to get out because there will be bombings, to bomb an area that’s hoarding terrorist leaders.

If the whole Israel-Palestine issue does not effect you personally, please shut the fuck up on the issue because you WILL OFFEND SOMEONE THAT IT PERSONALLY EFFECTS

Yeahh, alright buddy.

These “constant bombings” of Israel are Qassam rockets, which have killed a total of three people in the last couple of years. Or five, whichever source you happen to believe. Hamas doesn’t even fill their rockets with explosives, you literally have to get hit by one in order to die. You can get blown to bits in Gaza, by contrast, if you’re halfway down the street.

The civilian death toll in Gaza has nearly reached 45 according to the Huffington Post, and slightly less than that according to Ha’aretz. If think that’s acceptable in any way, shape, or form, then fuck you.

I’ve seen a lot of attempts to get sympathy by talking about the plight of Israelis who have to rush to bomb shelters in order to avoid rockets. Where is the awareness in the international Jewish community about the fact that Gazans do not even have bomb shelters? No. Fuck you. They have absolutely nothing to defend themselves against missile strikes, chemical weapons, and bombs.

Also: “but…but…but..the rockets! Israel is simply defending itself!1!”

Do people forget that the rockets are being fired because Israel refuses to return to the original borders laid out for it as a state? That Gaza is composed primarily of refugees who fled for their lives from other areas of Palestine? The rockets are being fired because Palestine remains oppressed. The people of the West Bank still deal with settler attacks, police brutality, theft of water resources, crippling poverty, home demolitions/evictions, and other forms of apartheid. The people of Gaza, while independent, are not free. Even in times of peace, when bombs are not raining down on mosques, hospitals, and apartment buildings- Gaza does not have liberty. Sanctions have forced 58% of the populace into extreme poverty, and half of this number lives in what is termed as “extreme poverty”. Whereas the Hamas government is largely corrupt, it cannot be blamed for the economic situation in Gaza. Israeli scholar Reuven Paz estimates that 90% of Hamas activities revolve around “social, welfare, cultural, and educational activities.” Some of these social services include running relief programs and funding schools, orphanages, mosques, healthcare clinics, soup kitchens, and sports leagues.

You want to stop rocket attacks? Awesome. Engage with the Palestinian people, stop committing atrocities, remove all settlers from the West Bank, and then work to return the country to the borders decided by the U.N.

GOD I love my followers for being so informed and articulate.

i mean look at the photos people:

i have yet to see a pic of an explosion on Israels side… have you?

Emma Watson in hijab

But whyy??

My question whenever people do dumb stuff like this - how would you feel if someone took a picture of Yasmin Mogahed (if you like her) and photoshopped it onto a picture of a woman wearing a mini skirt and cute little blouse, with a lovely blowout (ie, no hijab)?
My guess is you wouldn’t like it so much and would find it very offensive.

A guy asked a Muslim: Why do ur girls cover up their body and hair?
Answered: The Muslim guy smiled and got two sweets, he opened the first one and kept the other one closed. He thrown them both on the dusty floor and asked the guy: If I asked u to take one of the sweets which one u will choose?
The Man replied: The covered one.
Then the Muslim said that’s how we treat and see our women!
Pass on If you are a proud Muslim :)

I’m a Muslim and I do not agree with this comparison at all. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against the Hijab or anything.
But choosing to wear the Hijab doesn’t automatically make the girl modest or “clean”.
And choosing not to wear it the Hijab doesn’t automatically make her immodest or “dirty”
It’s more about intentions and actions. (in my opinion anyway)

also, comparing these individual women to INANIMATE CANDY STUFF ON THE GROUND?! Astaghfirullah, I ain’t here for that.

This misogynist bullshit is NOT Islam.
Relearn your religion if you think it is.
(Because a person’s character can totally be judged by whether or not he/she wears a certain garment! Derp dee derp dee deedily derp!)

aaaawwww come on… that was a cute comparison. he just said you dont want your womans goodies all out everywhere. i mean i see you guys point and somewhat agree but do we have to ruin everything with deep oppressive conjecture?

When it’s deeply misogynist nonsense that reduces a woman’s worth to whether or not she has been sexually penetrated, then ABSOLUTELY YES. There is nothing cute about it. It is constantly used to degrade and humiliate Muslim women, to frame them as hellbound sinners and ‘damaged goods’ if they’ve made even a slight mistake (which doesn’t even have to be sexual - can be as simple as a kiss, or being spotted hugging or holding hands with a man), while men who have been sexually active are not shamed for it to the same extent, and can go around saying how they want a ‘pure’ wife despite their own pasts, and no one bats an eye about it.
There is nothing cute about this nonsense. It is used to literally ruin the lives of countless, countless Muslim women. Fuck that shit.

Again i see the implications BUT what I’m saying is must we always be trying to “break the chains”. why cant we just enjoy the sentiments of being compared to sweets… Be shallow. Sometimes you need to just sit back and appreciate the ocean and not think about the sharks.

…If that is seriously what you have to say after what I said, then I have nothing to add to this. Except - LIVES ARE RUINED.
But hey, let’s be shallow bc I want to be the covered sweet, lol, unlike all the dusty other whores lololol.

When you don’t speak, they tell you it’s because you are a woman and you are oppressed by the men who share your religion or culture. Then you do speak up and they claim you are a part of foreign organizations, you’re brainwashed, or you’re just “another one of them.”

So decide: are you trying to save us from oppression or eliminate us because you’re afraid we don’t want your saving? Because the only thing you should really be afraid of is how empowered we are to change the climate you have created for us.

Sincerely, frustrated and confused Muslim women.

Be easy on our FeMiNiSt LiBeRaToRs though - it’s really painful for them when we don’t confirm their narrative of how oppressed we are. :( WON’T SOMEONE *PLEASE* THINK OF OUR WHITE FEMINIST LIBERATORS?!

Honestly, I think some Muslims place way too much importance on hijab, and not enough importance on basic Islamic values. Wearing proper hijab doesn’t necessarily make you a better Muslim, though sometimes it is an indicator. I know hijabis that almost never pray and will gossip about you the second you turn around.

If this is in reference to my post about the hijabi girl, I’d love to respond. :) You’re absolutely right. The hijab itself CAN be just a piece of cloth, and women who wear hijab are certainly not perfect, nor are they necessarily better Muslims than women who don’t wear it.

My comment was about purely the physical hijab. I wasn’t addressing the issue of inner hijab, which is something I can go on about forever, and something I think is very important. I addressed solely the physical hijab, because as a piece of cloth, it is one of the most politically and violently charged articles of clothing in existence. Yarmulkes and crucifix necklaces, for example, are not anywhere near as charged as that simple veil.

The Muslim woman who wears it immediately, at first glance, declares herself as an Other. She is an immediate, apparent representation of Islam, and for a lot of people that is something scary and/or negative.

When people see a hijabi woman, there’s no coming back from that. Immediately, despite everyone’s best intentions, she’s perceived as Different. And it takes a LOT of mental/emotional strength to deal with that, whether one is ‘good at’ other aspects of worship or not.

The FBI Knocked on My Door at Work Today--from Minnie Bruce Pratt

tierracita:

ultramaricon:

(Click through title for Facebook note.)

At 10:30 a.m. today, 10/1/12, there was a knock on my closed office door at my job at the Writing Program at Syracuse University. When I opened the door, a man in a suit asked if he could come in and talk to me—without identifying himself in any way.

When I refused, he pulled out an ID/badge container, flipped that open, and flashed a Federal Bureau of Investigation card with shield. He claimed he wanted to question me about a “former student.”

I stated that I did not wish to speak to him, and closed the door. The movements in struggle over the decades have taught me not to speak to the FBI under any circumstance.

For more information about knowing your rights and what to do if the FBI knocks, see the Center for Constitutional Rights guide:

“If An Agent Knocks”    http://ccrjustice.org/ifanagentknocks

The FBI has targeted progressive activists over many, many decades, including Civil Rights activists such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; the lesbian grand jury resister Susan Saxe; and, more recently, anti-war and labor activists in Minneapolis. (http://www.stopfbi.net/)

I’ve also learned from the struggle over the decades that letting people know what’s happening helps us all be strong and prepared.

Feel free to share this information widely.

Thanks Roy! Good info folks—especially with McCarthyism tactics/arrests re-appearing these days.

This is pertinent for my Muslim friends, too. If an agent shows up, have him/her identify him/herself, even if he/she doesn’t right away. Ask their name, ask for their business card, take it, and tell them that your lawyer will be in touch with them soon. Close the door, and call your local CAIR (Council of American Islamic Relations) office. That is what they are for. They will provide free legal help.

Also, if an agent shows up and you answer and he says, I’d like to speak to your father, and your dad’s wandering around in his shalwar behind you, DO NOT turn around and look at your dad and say, OK, here he is, and let your dad ask for a card, etc. You are under NO OBLIGATION to identify ANYONE in your household or your work vicinity. None whatsoever.

Ask who the person is. When they identify themselves as an agent, ask for their card, say your lawyer will be in touch, and close that door. Do not make small talk about the weather, or about the cute shoes you’re wearing, and do not invite them inside under any circumstances. These are your rights.
